“If you are a kid that likes to write poetry, you need to keep writing!” – dimitrireyespoet.com
Hi, poet! Writing is so much fun, isn’t it? As a teacher, I want others to be the best they can be. If you are a kid that likes to write poetry, you need to keep writing! That’s how you can get better. The easiest way to do that is to tell yourself that you can write and read and get better with more practice.
Poetry is fun because it’s different than writing in paragraphs. In poetry, instead of focusing on topic sentences, details, and a closing, your feelings are the most important. I want you to know that how you are feeling is the most important.
Before we begin exploring different ways to write, I want you to practice thinking! To practice thinking, you’ll need…
- a notebook
- a pencil
- a timer set to 5 minutes
Find a cozy and quiet spot at home and write about what you see for 10 minutes. If you want to think like a real poet, try to find that cozy spot by a window and observe what you see outside. Don’t forget to set your timer!
When you are done writing for the five minutes, think about the different things you wrote down and why they are important to you. Set the timer for another five minutes and write down what you thought. If you do this twice a week, you will begin noticing how easy it’ll be to start writing. What you journal is perfect material to put into a poem!
